Whether a barcode scans is decided before it prints
A thermal label is only as good as the stock it prints on and the way the roll is wound. Load a roll with the wrong core or the wrong sensing and the printer jams, mistracks, or prints half off the edge. Pick the wrong image method and the barcode fades before the shipment lands. We supply both blank thermal roll stock and fully pre-printed thermal labels, spec'd to your printer and your application from the start.
Choose the method
Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
Same printer families, two different ways to put an image on the label. Which one fits comes down to how long the label has to stay readable and what it faces on the way there. Pick one to compare.
No ribbon. A heat-sensitive top coat darkens under the printhead. Lower cost, fewer consumables, shorter image life.
- How it works
- The label surface reacts to heat from the printhead directly. Nothing to load, thread, or replace, so there is one less consumable to stock and less printer downtime between jobs.
- Durability & lifespan
- The image darkens further and fades with heat, sunlight, friction, and some chemicals. Best measured in weeks and months, not years. Keep it out of hot cabs, windshields, and direct sun.
- Cost profile
- Lowest cost per label, since there is no ribbon to buy or change. Fewer moving parts to manage across a fleet of printers.
- Best-fit uses
- Shipping and carrier labels, receiving, pick tickets, receipts, and visitor badges. Anything scanned and then discarded inside a short window.
Ribbon-printed. A wax, wax-resin, or resin ribbon melts onto the label. Tougher image that survives heat, chemicals, and UV.
- How it works
- The printhead melts ink from a ribbon onto the label surface. Matching the ribbon to the facestock matters: resin ribbons on film give the toughest, most chemical-resistant mark.
- Durability & lifespan
- Resists heat, UV, moisture, solvents, and abrasion. Stays readable for years, which is why it is the choice for anything that has to scan over the life of the product.
- Cost profile
- The ribbon adds a consumable, but the image holds up in conditions that would erase a direct thermal label. You are paying for permanence where it is required.
- Best-fit uses
- Product and asset labels, drum and chemical containers, cold storage and outdoor, GHS and compliance marking. Anything scanned long after it leaves the dock.

Authorized dealerAs an authorized Zebra dealer, we build stock for the full desktop-to-industrial line. Desktop units like the ZD-series take smaller cores and rolls; industrial units like the ZT-series run large 3-inch-core rolls at high duty cycles.
SATO
We spec stock for SATO desktop and industrial printers, including the CL-series. Industrial SATO units expect 3-inch-core rolls wound to fill the media hanger.
Datamax-O'Neil
Authorized dealerAs an authorized Datamax dealer, we produce for the I-Class, M-Class, and desktop units. Industrial Datamax printers run 3-inch-core rolls up to roughly 8-inch outer diameter.
Honeywell
We build compatible stock for Honeywell desktop printers like the PC-series and industrial units like the PM-series, matching core and roll size to the media path.
Intermec
We support Intermec PM and PX industrial printers, including legacy units still in service, with 3-inch-core rolls wound to the correct diameter and sensing.

What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer labels?
Direct thermal labels use a heat-sensitive top coat that darkens under the printhead, with no ribbon required. They cost less per label and suit shipping labels, receiving, and other short-life uses, but the image fades with heat, light, and abrasion. Thermal transfer labels use a wax, wax-resin, or resin ribbon that melts onto the label for an image that resists heat, chemicals, moisture, and UV. That makes them the choice for product labels, asset tags, and anything that has to stay readable for years.
Are your thermal labels compatible with Zebra, SATO, and Datamax printers?
Yes. We are an authorized Zebra and Datamax dealer, and we spec and produce thermal roll stock for Zebra, SATO, Datamax-O'Neil, Honeywell, and Intermec printers, desktop and industrial. We wind each roll with the correct core size, outer diameter, and gap, black-mark, or notch sensing so it loads and tracks in your specific unit.
Can you supply blank thermal roll stock in bulk for in-house printing?
Yes. We supply blank direct thermal and thermal transfer roll stock in the core sizes and roll diameters your printers take, and we can pre-print fixed elements, such as your logo and a template, in up to 7 PMS-matched colors while leaving a thermal-imprintable area for your variable barcode and data. Standard turnaround is about two weeks from artwork approval, and reorders are often quicker.
How do I know which core size and roll diameter to order?
It is set by your printer. Desktop units (for example Zebra ZD-series) typically take 0.5-inch or 1-inch cores with smaller rolls, while industrial units (for example Zebra ZT-series, SATO CL-series, or Datamax I-Class) take 3-inch cores with rolls up to roughly 8-inch outer diameter. Tell us your printer model and we match the core, the outer diameter that fits its media compartment, the wind direction, and the sensing type. If you are unsure, send a photo of a current roll.
Can you pre-print thermal labels with our logo and a verified barcode?
Yes. We print fixed artwork in up to 7 colors matched to Pantone and leave the variable field blank for your printer to image on demand. When we print the barcode, we verify it to ANSI/ISO grades on GS1-compliant materials before it ships, so it scans at the dock and the register, not just on screen.
What is the minimum order for custom thermal labels?
Minimums vary by size, material, and configuration. Send your specs and printer model and we will quote the order and the minimum for it. We produce for operations from single warehouses to national manufacturers, and we ship nationwide from New Jersey.
