Nobody inspects the glue. You spec the artwork, approve the color, sign off on the die — and then a label curls off a shampoo bottle in a warehouse, or peels in a walk-in cooler, and suddenly the adhesive is the only thing anyone wants to talk about. The wrong adhesive is the single most common cause of label failure, and it’s almost always avoidable.
Match the adhesive to three things: the surface (glass and metal are easy; most plastics are not), the temperature it'll live at (ambient, refrigerated, frozen, or hot), and whether it ever needs to come off cleanly. Get those three right up front and you avoid the two failures that cause the most grief — labels that peel and labels that leave residue. When in doubt, send us your container and we'll match it.
The mistakes are predictable. Labels peel in the fridge because a standard adhesive was used instead of a cold-temperature formula. Labels won’t stick to plastic jugs because standard acrylic wasn’t built for low-energy surfaces. Labels leave gummy residue because a permanent went where a removable belonged. None of these are exotic — they’re specification decisions that got skipped.
A pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) bonds when you press it on — no heat, no water, no chemical activation. The adhesive flows slightly into the microscopic texture of the surface, creating mechanical and molecular contact. Two properties matter, and they’re not the same thing:
Different formulations optimize those differently, which is why “sticky” isn’t a spec. A label can grab hard on contact and still fail long-term, or bond quietly for years without much initial grab.
Two chemistries do most of the work:
Acrylic vs. rubber, in one breath: Acrylic is the all-rounder — UV-stable, aging-stable, good chemical resistance, wide temperature range, and it comes in permanent, removable, cold-temperature, freezer-grade, and high-temperature versions. Rubber-based hits harder on contact, especially on stubborn low-energy plastics, but it's less UV- and aging-stable and only comes permanent.
That trade-off — acrylic’s versatility versus rubber’s raw grip — is the fork in the road for most difficult-surface jobs. Everything below is really just picking the right acrylic, or knowing when to reach for rubber instead.
Rather than march through every formula, here’s the honest breakdown — tap the one that sounds like your application. Each is self-contained, so you can skip straight to yours.
A general-purpose permanent adhesive with strong, durable bonding across most surfaces and temperature ranges. Application temperature typically 40°F–100°F; service temperature roughly 35°F–200°F; UV- and aging-stable. It’s the right call for most indoor and ambient product labels — retail labels on glass, metal, and smooth plastic, and anything that will never need to come back off. It is not the pick for freezer applications, low-energy surfaces that need aggressive tack, harsh-solvent exposure, or anywhere you’ll want clean removal later.
A permanent-feeling adhesive with a lower peel force, so it bonds firmly in use but releases without leaving residue — under the right conditions. “Removable” is a sliding scale: some grip harder than others, and true repositionable (Post-it-style) adhesives sit at the very low end of tack. Great for price and retail tags the consumer peels off, promotional labels, returnable containers, temporary warehouse ID, and prototype labels you may reapply. The catch: removable adhesives bond more strongly over time and at higher temperatures. A label that lifts cleanly after 24 hours can leave residue after six months, especially on porous surfaces. “Removable” does not mean “residue-free under all conditions” — test before you commit to a big run.
A permanent acrylic tuned to hold bond strength below what standard acrylic handles. Application temperature as low as 25°F–35°F; service temperature roughly 20°F–200°F. This is your adhesive for refrigerated containers, beverage bottles headed for chilled display cases, labels applied warm that then get stored cold, and wet or condensation-prone surfaces in refrigerated environments. It is not rated for frozen or below-freezing storage — that’s a different formula.
A high-performance acrylic for below-freezing storage and extreme cold. Application temperature as low as 0°F; service temperature down to -65°F, staying flexible and tacky without going brittle. Use it for frozen food labels, pharmaceutical cold-chain labels stored at -20°C or colder, containers that come straight out of a freezer, and cold-storage asset tags. One caveat: freezer-grade isn’t automatically “better.” It shines in the cold but offers no advantage over a cold-temperature adhesive in ambient use — match the adhesive to the actual temperature range, not to whichever sounds toughest.
A permanent adhesive — acrylic or rubber-based — with significantly higher initial tack than standard formulas. This is the fix for low-energy surfaces that standard adhesives slide right off: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and HDPE containers, rough or textured surfaces, recycled or contaminated substrates, powder-coated metal, and corrugated. Surface energy is the whole story here — glass and metal are high-energy and bond easily; most container plastics (squeeze bottles, detergent jugs, shampoo bottles) are low-energy and defeat standard adhesive. If your labels keep peeling off plastic, the adhesive type is almost always the reason.
A permanent adhesive built on rubber polymer instead of acrylic, for high initial tack and strong bonds on genuinely difficult surfaces. Reach for it on very low-energy plastics (PE, PP) where even high-tack acrylic falls short, on cold/wet/oily surfaces where instant tack is critical, on corrugated, and anywhere you need an aggressive bond right now. Trade-offs: less UV and aging stability than acrylic, it can yellow under UV, it’s not for outdoor jobs needing long-term UV stability, and it doesn’t come in a removable version.
A permanent adhesive engineered to hold at temperatures that would soften and release a standard formula. Continuous temperature to 300°F, with intermittent peaks of 400–500°F depending on formulation, paired with a polyester face stock (which tolerates more heat than paper or BOPP). Used on machinery near heat sources, oven labels, automotive components (exhaust-adjacent and engine-compartment), industrial equipment running hot, and sterilization labels on medical gear. Spec both numbers — continuous and peak. A label rated to 300°F continuous may not survive a 500°F spike; the adhesive charcoals at extreme peaks.
Watch out: "It's sticky enough" is not a specification. The two most expensive words in labeling are "seemed fine" — the label that seemed fine in the office is the one that peels in the cooler three weeks later. Spec the surface and the temperature range before the first run, not after the failure.
If you only nail down one variable, make it the surface — it’s the one that quietly wrecks the most jobs.

Pro tip: When you test a removable adhesive, test it for the length of time and at the temperature your label will really live at — not just overnight on a desk. The bond you get after six months in a warm room is the bond that matters.
